Uneven germination can come from old seeds, rockwool that is too wet or too dry, or cool temperatures. After 7 days, transplant the seeds that have sprouted and restart the rest.
How to Identify the Issue
You are experiencing inconsistent germination. Some seeds sprout quickly, some take over a week, and others don't germinate.
What is Happening?
This can be caused by several factors: old seeds, rockwool plugs being too wet or too dry during germination, or temperatures being too cool.
Prevention Steps
- Seed Storage: Store all seeds in a cool, dark, dry place. An airtight container in the refrigerator is ideal.
- Seed Age: For the best germination rates, use all seeds within 6 months of purchase.
- Germination Process: Follow our best practices laid out in the How to Plant Seeds for Your Flex Farm.
Resolution Steps
- If it has been 7 days and some seeds have still not germinated, we would recommend transplanting all seeds that are peeking above the rockwool cube pocket.
- If your rockwool cubes with seeds that did not germinate are still structurally in good condition, we would recommend reusing those rockwool cubes and restarting the germination process following the best practices laid out in the How to Plant Seeds for Your Flex Farm. When reusing the rockwool cubes, you can simply place more seeds in the cubes where the non-germinated seeds are.
